Report: Saints held by Derby
Our report from Pride Park, where Saints were pegged back by Derby County in the Emirates FA Cup third round...
17.11FULL-TIME: Derby 2-2 Saints
We'll be going to a replay at St Mary's, with neither side able to find a winner late on. Nathan Redmond had stole the show, with two solo strikes for Saints, but a second-half revival from Frank Lampard's side saw goals from Jack Marriott and Tom Lawrence even the scores. There were yet more debuts under Ralph Hasenhüttl - Callum Slattery and Marcus Barnes making their senior bows - but no way past Derby County as it finishes all square.
Marriott and Nugent combine
That was the opportunity for Derby glory. Nugent did well to keep the move alive, but Marriott couldn't keep his effort down, as Vestergaard leaped towards him.
Redmond tumbles
Another mazy run into the box, he eases past one, across comes substitute Waghorn on the cover, who ushers him out of the way, rather forcefully. Nothing given, before another chance for the winger, which Roos rebuffs.
An additional five...
We've got five additional minutes to find a winner at Pride Park.
Waghorn effort
He took it first time, edge of the area, but Angus Gunn watched it all the way and collected comfortably. We're into the final minute of normal time...
Yellow Card for Jack Marriott (Derby County)
For a heavy challenge on Matt Targett.
Into the final 5️⃣
Is their a hero among us? Come on, Saints!! 💪
Mazy run from Redderz
He almost runs the length of the pitch, and we've seen how dangerous he can be with the ball at his feet. He's swarmed by Derby defenders, and unfortunately runs out of room. Marcus Barnes was in attendance, but wasn't spotted.
Another chance goes begging...
Redderz at the heart of it, again. He tees up James Ward-Prowse inside the area, who is charged down, and he can't quite get his boot over the ball as it bounces up, lashing it off target.
Targett - Redmond link
Good play down the left between the two, yields a corner. An in-swinger from Ward-Prowse, which is flicked on by Austin, but no takers.
Barnes on for his debut!
It's a huge chance for 22-year-old Marcus Barnes to make a name for himself. Moi Elyounoussi is withdrawn.
2️⃣0️⃣ to go...
Finely poised here at Pride Park. Neither side will want a replay, so expect chances in the closing 20 minutes!
Huge chance! 😩
It's a lovely cross from Charlie Austin, who bends it around the Derby backline, and Elyounoussi is unmarked in the area. The winger throws his head at it, it's on target, but right down the throat of Roos. We should be ahead...
Yellow Card for Craig Bryson (Derby County)
For a late challenge on Jack Stephens.
Lawrence equalises
The creator of the first becomes the scorer of the second. It's a lovely effort from outside of the area, he put his right boot through the shot, and it flies past Gunn. The hosts are level.
GOAL
Tom Lawrence (61’) | 2 – 2

Marriott halves the deficit
It's the striker's tenth of the season. He was well found by Lawrence, who flicked the ball into his path, and he took it first time on the volley, finding the far corner and giving Gunn little chance to prevent it.
GOAL
Jack Marriott (58’) | 1 – 2

Acrobatics from Nugent
It's an overhead kick from the substitute, his first involvement. A difficult chance to execute, as it flies high and wide of target.
Redderz curler!
His second of the game (arguably), and Saints' second of the afternoon. He had only one thing in his mind when he picked the ball up off Charlie Austin, cutting inside, and curling a sumptuous effort past Roos from roughly 22 yards.
GOOOAL!!!
Nathan Redmond (48’) | 0 – 2
We're ready for the second 4️⃣5️⃣
It's Saints to get us under way, with no changes to either side.
Happy at the break? 😄
Well, his side lead, but there have been a few sights of goal for the hosts. Key to the second period will undoubtedly be defensive resilience, similar to what was shown against Chelsea midweek! 👊
HALF-TIME: Derby 0-1 Saints
This man's effort is the difference at the break, scored inside four minutes. It's been a positive half for Saints, but with chances also for the hosts. Holmes has looked the most dangerous for Frank Lampard's side, but Angus Gunn with only one meaningful save to make.
Marriott tees up Holmes
Holmes did well to shrug off a challenge from Ward-Prowse, he feeds Marriott, who returns the favour on the edge of the Saints technical area, and the shot wasn't bad either. Angus Gunn looked to have it covered, as it flew a whisker wide of the post.
Soooo close 😩
Inches away from another, as Jack Stephens's effort is turned agonisingly wide at the back post, with Roos stranded. Derby riding their luck somewhat there...
Slattery shot
Patient build up play from Saints, with the midfielder picking the ball up centrally, 25 yards from goal. He takes the shot on, confidently, but Roos is right behind it. Good to see the youngster trying his luck, though.
Long down injured
Receiving treatment after being clattered into by Evans. Looks to be okay, back on his feet.
Elyounoussi chance to break
His first touch was sublime, fooling the Derby defender, but his second had rather too much pace on it and the ball is recovered by the hosts. First competitive encounter between these two sides since 2012, and Saints continue to edge it...
Yellow Card for Mohamed Elyounoussi (Southampton)
For pulling back Holmes.
Holmes effort
It was loose from Callum Slattery, who gave the ball to Jack Marriott, and he drives at goal accompanied by Holmes, who eventually gets the ball. Takes the shot on, inside the area, but it's comfortable enough for Angus Gunn at his near post.
Wayward from Lawrence
A half chance for Derby, but unlikely to trouble Gunn from that distance. He's happy to watch the ball sail over the bar. The hosts with possession, but unable to penetrate Saints, who look organised in defence - buoyed by their clean sheet against Chelsea last time out.
1️⃣ month in! 😇
Ralph Hasenhüttl has been in charge for one month today! Here's to many more, boss... ❤️
Derby forced back
It's congested in central midfield, with Saints remaining compact out of possession. They're forcing Derby to play backwards, just as Jack Marriott swings the ball in for Holmes, who wasn't able to get there.
Possession game
Derby enjoying a spell with the ball, but in areas that aren't dangerous to Saints. The visitors are doing well to contain and frustrate Frank Lampard's side. They do eventually get a shot off, but Max Lowe dragged it well wide.
📸
An early look at Saints' goal celebration, after Redderz (or Richard Keogh) had put the visitors in front. Jury's out on who'll be attributed with the goal...
Lawrence free-kick...
Gets the execution all wrong there. He was looking for the back post run of several Derby players, but it's overhit and runs out for a goal-kick. Angus Gunn opts to go long...
Spell of pressure...
Super cross from Matty Targett, towards the head of Charlie Austin, whose so dangerous in the air, but he's beaten to it. The ball is recycled and delivered from the right this time, in search of Shane Long, whose header is off target.
Shot from Bryson
Always travelling well wide of the mark from range. He's scored twice for Derby this term, but no trouble for Angus Gunn on this occasion. The hosts are beginning to enjoy more possession though...
Goal replay... 📺⚽️
Redderz may well claim the opener as his own. The strike looked to be on target before the intervention of Richard Keogh, who made sure it was turned into the net. Nonetheless, Saints lead early on! 👊
Elyounoussi gives chase...
He wins a throw for Saints, deep in Derby territory, which is taken by Cédric to Shane Long. But the ball is overran, Derby goal-kick to follow.
Redmond's shot deflected in... 🎉
WHAT A START! Redderz picked the ball up, centrally, 25 yards from goal and drove at the Derby backline. His low shot flew past keeper Roos, and was inadvertently turned into his own net by Richard Keogh.
OWN GOAL!
Richard Keogh (4’) | 0 – 1
Slattery on the ball
A couple of early touches for the youngster, which will settle his nerves! He's operating in midfield alongside fellow Academy graduate James Ward-Prowse.
15.03It's showtime Saints! 👊
We're under way here at Pride Park. Marriott kicks off, with Frank Lampard in the home dugout, having won the competition four times as player - scoring the winner in the 2009 final for Chelsea.
15.00Warm-ups complete! 🔥
Game faces on! We're five minutes away from kick off here, and the players are in the tunnel. James Ward-Prowse will lead Saints out for this one...
14.56Another game, another Saints debut! 👏
It's another Academy graduate debut for today's Emirates FA Cup clash, as 19-year-old Callum Slattery comes into midfield in place of Oriol Romeu, who drops down to the bench. There's also places among the substitutes for Marcus Barnes, Kayne Ramsay, Tyreke Johnson and Yan Valery! The assembly line continues...😇
