Attendance: 30,335 (1,560)

Thank you to all Saints fans, young and old, who braved the weather in these freezing conditions! ❄️

17.10

Frustration!

We feel you, Redderz! It was a trying day at St Mary's, where weather conditions were less than ideal. A point gained, but it could so easily have been all three. 😣

17.02

FULL-TIME: Saints 0-0 Stoke City

The referee calls time on an agonising day for Saints. A valiant effort, but some resolute defending from the visitors held it to a draw. It may well be viewed as two points dropped for Mauricio Pellegrino, after dominating so steadfastly!

2️⃣minutes added

Keep battling boys, we're right behind you! Two minutes added to the allotted 90.

89’

Cèdric fires from distance

Well held again from Butland, who has undoubtedly kept his side in it! If Stoke glean a point here, or all three, they will be indebted to their 'keeper!

83’

Stephens strong 💪

The defender flicks the ball out for a corner, taking the danger away from Crouch. Shaqiri had delivered an inviting cross, but it was dealt with well.

Final 🔟

Come on lads, make this domination count! We're in to the final ten minutes at St Mary's!

79’

Southampton substitution: Shane Long replaces Guido Carrillo

Final change for Mauricio Pellegrino! Another attacking one, but can he be the difference?

78’

Boufal straight in to the action

The Moroccan had the chance to put Saints in to the lead, with near immediacy, having just entered the field. He rose well, connected with the header, but diverted it agonisingly wide.

76’

Southampton substitution: Sofiane Boufal replaces Josh Sims

A standing ovation for the youngster, who has been superb on his first start of the season!

📸

If only possession yielded goals! 15 minutes to make the breakthrough. Come on Saints! 👊

73’

Constant pressure...

It is an onslaught here, but again we can't convert. Redmond shoots for the umpteenth time, but Butland spills it. No takers on the rebound! Agony 😫

72’

Offside flag...

Saints were queuing up at the back post to divert the delivery goalward, Romeu among them. But the linesman's flag was raised. Redmond in the aftermath, asking questions of Butland, and again the England international has all the answers! 😠

70’

In ascendancy...

Saints doing everything, but putting the ball in the net here. Bertrand this time with the effort, cries of handball from the stands, but only a corner given. Carrillo rises under pressure, but is beaten to it.

Red hot Redderz

The wideman does superbly well to beat two defenders on the wing, makes it to the byline, and crosses deftly. The ball falls fortuitously to Cédric, who fires at Butland, but the keeper makes a great save to deny Saints once more.

64’

Southampton substitution: Manolo Gabbiadini replaces Dušan Tadić

A popular one inside St Mary's, greeted with cheers and chants of his name, the Italian replaces Tadić in attack.

Sponsored by Utilita

63’

Stoke City substitution: Jesé Rodríguez Ruiz replaces Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting

A final throw of the dice for the visitors!

Sponsored by Utilita

61’

Choupo-Moting in on goal...

Jack Stephens is retreating, caught the wrong side. McCarthy seemingly does enough to deter the forward, who scoops his effort aimlessly over the bar. He could - perhaps should - have Stoke in the lead. A definite let off! 😰

Sims draws the foul

Cédric with the dead ball delivery, which is awkwardly cleared by Zouma, at the second attempt. Tadić does well in the next phase, as the ball falls kindly to Sims, who hits it cleanly, but Butland saves. 😬

55’

Redderz with good feet

The foward's trickery fools his opposition defender, and wins a corner. Butland elects to punch, only as far as Cédric, who reloads the box with another delivery. Saints need to capitalise on this pressure!

Danger man 🔥

He's at it again in this second half, willing Saints forward and providing threat. Still goalless here.

HT

Saints showing signs

The home side are again on the front foot, lead courageously by young Sims. The wideman latches on to a smart pass from Carrillo, charges forwards before unleashing the shot - which is well saved. Lemina on the follow up is also denied.

HT

Stoke City substitution: Peter Crouch replaces Konstantinos Stafylidis

The visitors make their second change of the afternoon, as the leggiest striker in the land replaces midfielder Stafylidis.

HALF-TIME: Saints 0-0 Stoke City

The home side are edging this cagey tie here at St Mary's, but given the high stakes, it is not surprising that we enter the interval goalless.

Tadić goes close

The Serb's effort on the turn goes wide of the post, but is indicative of Saints' attacking intent here, as the half comes to a near end!

Saints probe

The home side continue to dominate the chances created here. Corner after corner have gone amiss. Redmond this time had worked the ball well down the left, but the danger was stabbed clear by Pieters.

44’

Yellow Card for Geoff Cameron (Stoke City)

First booking of the afternoon is dealt to Cameron.

43’

Top save!

McCarthy forced in to a superb save from a relatively innocuous situation. Shaqiri fired a ball in to the area, where N'Diaye's glancing header could have crept inside the post, if not for the outstretched glove of Saints' stopper.

41’

Tadić Carrillo combination

The forward floats one towards Carrillo, who grapples with his man, but can't make clean contact with the ball. Tadić then goes over in the box, looked clumsy from Stoke, but the referee isn't interested.

36’

Sims solo

The 20-year-old with a scintillating first touch to beat his man, before driving towards goal. He wins a corner for his side, which is wasted. Signs look positive, though!

32’

Good build up

Saints working the ball cautiously around the Stoke box, and win a corner for their troubles. Delivered by Redmond and met by Hoedt, then Stephens, but neither can direct goalward.

25’

Stafylidis fires over

The midfielder slices the ball wildly over, from a good position just outside the Saints technical area. Perhaps should have done better.

23’

Stoke City substitution: Erik Pieters replaces Mame Biram Diouf

The striker gingerly walks off the pitch, after going down clutching his arm. He looks to have fallen awkwardly and is replaced by Pieters, as Choupo-Moting pushes higher.

📸

Josh Sims battling well down the right side of midfield. The youngster looks keen to make the most of the chance handed to him by Mauricio Pellegrino!

19’

Saints threat

Good passage of play for the hosts! Redmond beats his man down the left, sticks a cross up at the far post. No takers. But the ball is well retrieved by Sims, before the pass intended for Tadić is overhit.

15’

Sims lively

The youngster looks bright on the ball, as he tries to thread a pass through to Carrillo. The direction was correct, but accuracy a little off. He gets a clap from the admiring fans nonetheless.

14’

Stoke corner

Delivered by Shaqiri, as Cameron tussled with Bertrand at the back post. No danger there, and Saints win the foul. McCarthy restarts, and gets Saints back on the immediate attack.

11’

Saints nearly caught

Attack swiftly descends in to defence, as Shaqiri had isolated last man Cédric at the back. He had Diouf for company, but the pass was wayward. A let off for the hosts!

Increase in tempo

Saints have upped the pace here, with Josh Sims getting involved frequently. We look comfortable in possession, but must watch the threat of Shaqiri and Choupo-Moting on the break!

15.08

Saints corner!

Carrillo is the obvious aerial threat for the home side, as he attempts to connect with a Cédric cross. Saints go short with the corner routine, and it doesn't quite come off.

15.06

Bauer crosses

The full-back was invited forward by danger man Shaqiri, and fizzes a delivery across the face of goal. McCarthy was happy to watch it float past him, satisfied that there was little impending danger.

15.04

Joe Allen gets Stoke forward

A miscommunication between Lemina and Romeu in midfield gifts Stoke an early chance. Wesley Hoedt clears the danger, before N'Diaye's shot from range is well held by McCarthy.

15.03

We're under way...

Xherdan Shaqiri gets the game going. It's a big one here, and we need all your support once again, Saints fans! 💪
